LGBTQ+ History & Organizations

June is National Pride Month, and while we can’t wait to throw on our rainbow garb and safely attend as many parades as we can, we want to make sure we are remembering why we celebrate and why this month holds so much importance.

On June 28th 1969, the New York Police Department raided the Stonewall Inn, which was a famous gay bar in the Greenwich Village of Manhattan. Police raids of gay bars were routine during this time, but on this particular night, members of the LGBTQ+ community decided to fight back. The incident that happened at the Stonewall Inn came to be known as the Stonewall Riots, which later became a symbol of resistance to political and social discrimination of the LGBTQ+ community.

While we are celebrating Pride in a multitude of ways, we urge anyone who has the means to donate to LGBTQ+ organizations and businesses. While we see many big brands showing their support towards the LGBTQ+ community, a good chunk of that money does not necessarily go directly towards helping people. Rather than supporting massive corporations, here is a list of smaller organizations and businesses that actively support their community members.

We hope you all have an amazing Pride Month and want to remind you that support for the LGBTQ+ community goes beyond just rainbows and parades. Pride should be cherished and celebrated everyday, not just through the month of June.
