Books That Pass the Vibe Check
The Peachy Keen team has been reading a good amount since quarantine happened, and honestly, we’ve really loved being able to curl up after a long day with a good book and a glass of wine by our sides! We thought it would be fun to show you all what we’ve been reading and what our thoughts are for each read! Listed below are our three favorite books right now, why we can’t put them down, and why we think you should read them! Enjoy!
1.) Debbie’s Pick: Where the Crawdad’s Sing by Delia Owens
If you love a goody mystery book with heart, then this one is for you! Where the Crawdad’s Sing is a story about two very different backgrounds that ultimately find themselves intertwined. The book does a great job at being both a coming of age story while also juxtaposing the natural world and how we go about living in it. The story is just as mysterious as it is smart and has topped the New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2019 & 2020!
Debbie enjoys this book because it is unlike anything she has read before!
"Where the Crawdad’s Sing is one of those books that makes you feel like you are taking a deep breath in. The story is coming of age, but also a love story with nature. Owens really blended the perfect amount of growth, romance, drama, sadness, and mystery all wrapped up in such a beautiful writing piece!”
Debbie could not recommend this book enough and has already had 5 of her friends pick up a copy and read it for themselves!
2.) Taylor’s Pick: The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
Brit Bennett is an extraordinary author who came out on top in 2020 with her bestseller, The Vanishing Half. This book is the second novel that Bennett has written and follows the lives of two sisters from a small town who go on to live very different lives. The story showcases the girls as they grow up and go through different hardships as one of them stays behind in the town that she tried so hard to escape from while the other secretly passes as white.
The book is also now being made into an HBO limited series, with Bennet as the executive producer. While the show will be great in its own right, Taylor highly suggests reading the book before watching the series.
“Seeing how the two sisters go through their lives in two very different, yet similar, ways is equal parts beautiful as it is haunting. You see one sister try so hard to re-connect with the other, while the other sister is desperately trying to forget her past and where she came from. It definitely made me tear up at certain points and I think everyone should read it if they have not already.”
3.) Jillian’s Pick: Dear Nature by John Newling
This book is more so an ode to nature and is perfect for those who love to immerse themselves into a lush and beautiful world. John Newling spent 81 days writing 81 love letters to nature that go from contemplating how humans treat our world to poetic blurbs that gleefully describe how vast and amazing nature truly is. The book does a great job at bringing different topics into the mix, such as the history of agriculture, economics, and religion.
Jillian loves this book because she knows it is the perfect read for fellow earth lovers like herself!
“In Dear Nature, Newling writes letters to nature everyday for a year. The act of writing a letter to someone you care about is as sentimental as you can get and we see Newling express his very real and complex emotions of love, distress, frustration, and gratitude. It is an easy read at the surface, but a complicated dissection of human thought and process. It can definitely bring a smile to your face reminding you that there is beauty everywhere in the world or it can give you the push to go out into your community and make a difference!”
We hope that this little blog about our favorite reads inspires some of you to go and buy from your local bookstore or check-out from your cities library! We believe reading is a great way to spend some downtime and always encourage filling your minds with useful and potent information!
